    Understanding the Mining Industry: From A to Z

    Day 1 - Introduction to Mining: Technical Aspects (mine life stages, exploration, mining studies, the mining process, design and planning, quantification and interpretation, extraction and processing, rehabilitation)

    Day 2 - The Economics of Mining (operations into economics, exploration expenditure, determining capital requirements, mining equipment options, economic evaluation)

    Day 3 - Financing and Deal-Making (raising funds and financial instruments, equity investments, debt and project finance, joint ventures, marketing and off-take agreements, technical report and media release interpretation)

    Understanding the COAL Industry: From A to Z

    Day 1 - Coal outlook, Geology and exploration, open cut mining, underground mining methods, coal handling and preparation plant, mining economics

    Day 2 - Mine planning, geotechnical, ventilation and gas, underground coal gasification, coal seam methane, engineering services and short term planning, health & safety, regulation

    Your course leader is Dr. Willem Smuts, a geologist with a Masters degree in sedimentology from the University of Port Elizabeth (1987) and a Ph.D. from Pretoria University (1998) on the origins of coal. He is a registered professional earth scientist and has authored and co-authored over 79 scientific and technical papers. Wil- lem has 27 years of technical and management experience in the fields of research, exploration, mining and consulting. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of a junior diamond explorer in Botswana. He has edited several leading mining magazines, independently consults on coal, gold and base metals ex- ploration and has been delivering hands-on mining courses and workshops for companies and individuals around the globe.
