MineAfrica at PDAC 2011 Report
Its pretty amazing that 27,700 people from 118 countries would gather in blustery Toronto in early March for a mining convention. And for those with a specific interest in mining in Africa there were three African focussed events over the four days that catered to them:
The week kicked off with South Africa's Mining Industry: The Perceptions and Reality seminar on Sunday morning where seventy-five participants learned about the realities surrounding South Africa's drop in the Fraser Institute Survey of Mining Companies and Canadian perceptions on investing in South Africa. At the sold-out PDAC trade show traffic was busy at the four MineAfrica booths with nine exhibitors comprising a blend of African governments and private sector companies including Algeria Ministry of Mines and Energy, CA Mining: Global Recruitment, Guinea Ministry of Mines, MDM Engineering, Mining Weekly, Mintek, Niger Ministry of Mines and Energy, Senegal Ministry of Mines and Industry, Spidersat Communications Limited and Webber Wentzel Attorneys. A 7:30 am start on Tuesday March 8 did not deter a record three hundred and sixty participants at the Premier African Mining Event in North America - the Chamber's 12th Annual Mining Breakfast and MineAfrica's 9th Annual Investing in African Mining seminar with Premier Sponsor SGS.
South Africa's Minister of Mineral Resources, Susan Shabangu, opened the morning, followed by R. Michael Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Platinum Group Metals, addressing the African Market Discount.
After a brief networking break twenty-four mining companies, African Ministers and expert advisors to the mining industry delivered concise presentations covering African mining projects, investment opportunities and doing business in Africa's mining industry in four concurrent seminar rooms.
